Course Description

(One term) Meets college ‘b’ requirement

This is a college-level course designed to help students become critical readers of a variety of texts, concentrating on American literature and non-fiction texts. The works are mostly arranged chronologically and based on the theme “The Quest for the American Dream,” although some additional pieces will be included among certain units in order to cover a variety of rhetorical contexts. The course is designed for students who have demonstrated exceptional skills in English and are drawn to rigorous literary analysis and advanced composition. This class prepares students for the Advanced Placement Examination in English. Students passing the exam receive an extra grade point for completion. (The extra point UC and CSU schools as well as many private colleges accept). Students will
demonstrate mastery of the California State English Language Arts content standards for the 11th and 12th grade upon completion of the required 11th and 12th grade English courses. Prerequisites: at least a “B+” grade in the previous English courses, completion of pre-course assignments, and/or teacher recommendation
