What is IGNiTE?
Ignite Builds Political Ambition in Young Women
Ignite was founded in 2009 to build young women’s political ambition and train them to run for office.
Women don’t run for office at the same rates as men.
Why? They aren’t asked or encouraged to, and because women under-value their qualifications, they don’t typically put themselves forward. While there are a number of organizations that recruit, train, and support adult women to run, no one is building political ambition among young women. We need an easy way to inspire young women to become civic and political leaders, then to connect them to opportunities where they can exercise these new skills.
Ignite does just that: we implement a political training program, specifically tailored to the needs of young women. Our model brings the program to any community that wants it, then within that community, builds a cadre of young women who first become civically engaged, then become civic leaders, and ultimately pursue elective office.

LLC Young Women Leaders Head to the Capitol
In April, some of our Law, Language & Culture Academy students went with Ignite to the state capitol to meet with women legislators, sit in on committee meetings and learn more about what happens at our state capitol. The experience provided this group of young women with a unique opportunity. Please enjoy LLC student Janice Le’s description of her experience.
"Given the opportunity to go to the Capitol last Wednesday was an experience that I will never forget or don't regret taking at all. For a while now I've been wondering, "What am I going to do after high school?" I knew that I wanted to go to college, but I didn't know what p what I wanted to do...For most of my life, starting from middle school until now, I knew that I wanted to do something where I felt I would have a purpose and place. After visiting capital hill and shadowing Senator Carol Liu, I realized that I wanted to work within the state legislature, and become one of the staffers and even one day being a Senator or Assembly member. I know it may seem absurd to think about it now, but it's a dream that I want to turn into a reality... I have come to realize what I want to do and who I want to be and what I need to achieve to get there. Ignite is a program that does what it says it does, "Inspire women leaders." I was definitely inspired on that trip! Thank you for providing me this opportunity!! – Janice Le, San Lorenzo High School
