World History

Course Description

World History classes study the development of the modern democratic world from the 18th century to the present.  In addition to meeting the California State Content Standards for Modern World History, SLz’s World History classes develop the reading, writing and critical thinking skills being stressed in the Common Core Standards.  Students will examine primary and secondary sources, including films, photographs, political cartoons, speeches, newspaper articles to answer questions that continue to generate debate today:


  • Who should have power?  What is the ideal form of government?
  • How should wealth be distributed?  Who should profit from labor?  Does technology improve our lives or diminish our humanity?
  • How can a weak nation resist a stronger nation?
  • Why is there war?  How can we create a lasting peace?
  • How do dictators gain and maintain control over the people of a nation?
  • What is acceptable behavior during wartime?  What conditions make it possible for people to commit atrocities?
  • When should countries get involved in the internal affairs of other countries?
  • How can countries come to peace with actions in the past?


Throughout the year, students are taught to think critically, justify their claims, use evidence to make arguments, and demonstrate their thought processes, all of which improve their reading and writing skills.  In addition to traditional quizzes and tests, students create posters, presentations, guidebooks, reports and other projects to allow students of multiple learning styles to demonstrate their understanding of course content.
